Osteoimmunology and nutritional science.

چکیده
The concept of osteoimmunology was established more than a decade ago and is based on the reciprocal relationship between immune and bone cells. This way of looking to these two organs skeletal and immune system, has resulted in the development of clinical therapeutics for seemingly disparate but linked by the common themes of inflammation and bone remodeling. 1 Osteoimmunology includes osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis and periodontal disease which have prominent effects on quality of life, increase the incidence in the population, and have crucial socioeconomic issues. 2 Immune system and bone are both intricate organs which have different tasks. To preserve balance in bone, while responding to different inputs (such as nutrition, mechanical stress, ageing, and inflammation), the bone marrow cells are controlled by immune systems in concert with endocrine and neural systems. 5 As a fact, if we look at the bone marrow space as “loosely compartmentalized lymphoid organ” there would be no doubt in intensive interact and influential effects between these two systems. 6 In 1997, the receptor activator of the nuclear factor-kappa-B ligand (RANKL)/RANK/Osteoprotegerin (OPG) pathway was recognized as an important signal transduction pathway that regulate the coupling mechanism between osteoblasts and osteoclasts or bone remodeling process. 3

متن کاملCytokine-Mediated Bone Destruction in Rheumatoid Arthritis
Bone homeostasis, which involves formation and resorption, is an important process for maintaining adequate bone mass in humans. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease characterized by inflammation and bone loss, leading to joint destruction and deformity, and is a representative disease of disrupted bone homeostasis. The bone loss and joint destruction are mediated by immunological...
متن کاملOsteoimmunology: The Nexus between bone and immune system.
Osteoimmunology is an interdisciplinary research field which combines the existing fields of osteology (bone biology) and immunology under one umbrella. The observation that contributed enormously to the emergence of osteoimmunology as an independent field of investigation was the enhanced bone loss in various inflammatory bone diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis and periodontit...
متن کاملOsteoimmunology at the nexus of arthritis, osteoporosis, cancer, and infection.
Over the past decade and a half, the biomedical community has uncovered a previously unappreciated reciprocal relationship between cells of the immune and skeletal systems. Work in this field, which has been termed "osteoimmunology," has resulted in the development of clinical therapeutics for seemingly disparate diseases linked by the common themes of inflammation and bone remodeling. Here, th...
متن کاملOsteoimmunology: A Brief Introduction
Recent investigations have demonstrated extensive reciprocal interactions between the immune and skeletal systems, resulting in the establishment of osteoimmunology as a cross-disciplinary field. Here we highlight core concepts and recent advances in this emerging area of study.
